Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers – Free Crochet Pattern

I like to crochet. A lot. I enjoy discovering new patterns and making things that I’ve never made before. So when a friend of mine – a nurse in a dialysis center – asked me if I could make some arm warmers for her patients, I decided to see what I could figure out. After a bit of trial and error, Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers were born.

Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers – Free Crochet Pattern

What Makes Dialys-Sleeves Different From Normal Arm Warmers?

Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers are designed specifically for dialysis patients. They may also be helpful for people donating plasma or going through chemotherapy. They fit the arms from shoulder to fingertips. The attached mitt buttons back when the wearer wishes to use their hands.

Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers are created to be quite loose. The many buttons up the center allow access to the entire arm, as well as the back of the hand. They are designed to help the patient stay warm without disturbing medical equipment the way that blankets can. Keeping the arms warmer helps to reduce some of the risks associated with chilled appendages and slow circulation during dialysis treatments.

The Story – In Slightly More Detail

A friend of mine asked me to create Dialys-Sleeves. A nurse in a dialysis center, she was quite concerned about her clients. Many of them suffered terribly from cold while undergoing treatment. The filtering process lowers the temperature of the blood, and although it is reheated before returning to the client’s body, it still is often not quite warm enough. Covering with blankets can help, but the arm receiving treatment usually goes uncovered to prevent risk to the medical equipment.

A few of her clients purchased a pair of Dialys-Sleeves that I crocheted, and I created a number of other pairs in different colors and opened an Etsy Shop, selling a few more pairs and some of the patterns, too.

Not Really My Thing

However, as much as I love to crochet, making the sleeves for sale just wasn’t working for me. It was too time-consuming, with me making less than $1 an hour when filling an order. I didn’t feel right charging more for them. I also found that after the initial orders, interest disappeared, almost certainly because I was putting very little energy into promoting them. Ultimately, I decided to close my Etsy shop except for this pattern, which I allowed people to buy for 20 cents, the minimum I could charge.

But I created Dialys-Sleeves Arm Warmers to help others and that really matters to me. Even if I’m not interested in selling them, I want them to be available to anyone who can use them. This crochet pattern is made for advanced beginners who have mastered the basic stitches. It is the first pattern I ever wrote, but I did my best to break the steps down and illustrate everything.
